Biomass refers to the bio degradable part of products, waste and residues from Agriculture, forestry and related industries as well as some portion of industrial and municipal waste.

Within Origen, when we refer to Biomass we refer mainly to Wood energy in the form of pellet or wood chip. Wood pellets are used in highly efficient Automatic wood boilers, they burn very efficiently because they have extremely low moisture content and they are an extremely dense form of wood having been compressed from virgin sawdust to form a highly compact thermal unit.

As wood pellets are very compact, a very large amount of wood energy can be stored in a small area, typically they come in bags, although wood pellets can also be delivered by truck, and the minimum deliver is 3 Tons as stipulated by the SEAI. Wood pellets can be ordered from local fuel stockists throughout Ireland.

Wood chips on the other hand are a much more cost effective means of heating with Biomass as they are produced from chipping existing and waste wood and in many cases the end user may already have a supply of waste wood. The moisture content tends to be higher than with pellet systems, although most modern wood chip boilers have been built to cope with moisture contents of up to 50%.
