Cloughjordan - Rems Solarfields

Origen Energy Ltd together with its sister company Polytherm Heating Systems Ltd designed and supplied the Calpex district heating network for the eco village in Cloughjordan Co. Tipperary. The scheme involved the installation of various sizes of Calpex district heating pipe through a central network from the bio mass boiler plant branching into individual houses/sites for individual home metering.

The brief called for a District Heating System for a total of 136 homes on the site and the total boiler load required is in the region of 1000KW. The installation was carried out with the new innovative Calpex T shell system. With the T-Shell system the Calpex district heating pipe system can be installed much quicker through the use of plastic half shells that clip together after a T-Joint is made and ensure that the re-insulation of the fitting area can be carried out quickly and professionally with minimum labour.

The District heating Network in Cloughjordan Eco-Village operates like a domestic central heating system only on a larger scale. Water is heated by the Biomass central heating unit and circulated through the pipework network to each individual dwelling in Cloughjordan Eco-Village. Each dwelling has its own separate meter and an electronic system controlling the internal temperature. As with all district heating systems that Origen Energy Ltd are involved with, we are able to offer technical assistance with the sizing of the circulation pumps, the sizing of the distribution pipe work and fittings, the flue installation, the expansion tanks and also all controls associated with the entire installation and of course space heating within individual homes on the site.

Also installed in the eco village site in Cloughjordan was a 500m² solar panel field. For the solar panel array, Origen Energy Ltd in conjunction with our sister company Polytherm Heating Systems Ltd designed and supplied a complete solar piping system, to remove the heat from the solar field and transport it back to the energy centre. This was done through the utilisation of a special preinsulated piping system, supplied from Brugg piping systems, known as Casaflex. Casaflex is a unique flexible pipe. However, unlike Calpex, it is made from corrugated stainless steel and has a very high temperature and pressure resistance. Casaflex is CFC free and is made from flexible Polyurethane foam and has outstanding thermal heat insulation properties. It operates up to 180 degrees Celsius and up to a maximum operating pressure of 25 bar. It is ideal for solar heating installations where pipe work needs to be buried. It is also ideal for solid fuel applications and for any application that has an unusually high pressure and or temperature demand.

Origen Energy Ltd can also supply district heating sub-stations that produce instantaneous domestic hot water and accurately meter all water services entering the apartment which facilitates accurate billing to each occupier and future proofs cold water metering by the local authorities if required. The eco village in Cloughjordan is one of many district heating systems that Origen energy Ltd has been involved with.
